What is this NFL flex scheduling I keep hearing about?

Apparently the first game of it was last night's Bears-Giants game?

Apparently, the NFL and the TV networks can reschedule games. For instance, the Bears/Giants game was originally scheduled at 1:00 on Fox, as a regional broadcast. Because of the importance of the game, it was switched to a national broadcast on NBC during prime time.

The NFL looks at the lineups for the remaining games on Sundays and picks the best one to be moved to Sunday Night.

That way they can get better viewership, and get more revenue.

Think about it, would you rather watch Arizona play Miami, or Baltimore play Chicago?

I know that these teams don't play it is just to illistrate my point.
When NBC rejoined the NFL Family this year - they wanted the option to pick and choose the games they wanted to provide. They wanted a flex (flexable) schudule. So, in August Chicago and New York were not the scheduled teams for Sunday Night. But, NBC thought that was the best game this week and they used their flex schedule ability. I hope I haven't confused you.
Flex scheduling was part of the contract NBC made with the NFL for the Sunday night game.

In essence, this is the deal:

In order to make sure they get the best matchup and highest ratings for the national game, NBC gets to pick which of the Sunday games is played at night. I'm not sure when the pick has to be made, but NBC gets to move one game for their telecast.

Kind of messes up team travel schedules and fan's attendance plans, but makes for more interesting viewing down the playoff stretch.
Now until the end of the regular season, NBC will show games with playoff implications. I think last season on Monday Night Football the Packers played the Ravens played near the end of the season and both teams were going nowhere. And I think that was the reason for it.
good question.

they kept saying it yesterday during the race and I was wondering, too.
It allows for the best match ups to be moved to Sunday night football and to the late afternoon games. For example, last nights Bears-Giants game was flex scheduling.

Also go Bears!
